US (state) Tax in GOM
So you work in GOM flying offshore out of LA (or TX, MS or AL) and you live in another state; I assume you would pay state income tax to the state where you live......so can someone explain the "exception" on LA tax W-4? form thanks

Texas doesn't have a state income tax. Because pilots fall under DOT rules their tax liability is treated different. You will need to talk with a expert in DOT tax issues. Each company is a little different in how they treat state income taxes.

taxes
you will pay taxes in the state in which you reside legally. It takes some work from your accountant but that is the way it will turn out.

Depending on the state where your "work address" is, you may be required to file a tax return there too.
The best (and only) advice is speak to an accountant, that is familiar with both states taxes (The state on your W2 and your homes state, if different)
