Update

A 50-year-old New Zealand man is dead after the helicopter he was piloting hit power lines and crashed to the ground in Victoria's Gippsland region.

Emergency services were called to Ballmans Rd, Ryton Junction, at around 2pm (4pm NZT) on Thursday and discovered helicopter wreckage.

"It is believed the pilot was spraying in the area and has hit power lines before crashing to the ground," a police spokeswoman said in a statement.

"The pilot, a 50-year-old from New Zealand, died at the scene."

Police are preparing a report for the coroner and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau is also investigating.
