Haiti aid chopper crashes
Posted Fri Feb 5, 2010 3:44pm AEDT
A helicopter believed to be involved in aid operations in Haiti has crashed in the western Dominican Republic, killing two men who were aboard, officials say.
"Up to now we have two bodies, the pilot and co-pilot," Dominican Civil Aeronautics Institute spokesman Pedro Jimenez said.
The nationality of the two killed was not immediately clear.
The R44 helicopter, a light four-seat civil aircraft produced by the Robinson Helicopter Company of the United States, crashed about 7.00pm (local time) in the province of Dajabon, 305 kilometres north-west of the capital Santo Domingo, Mr Jimenez said.
The aircraft was en route from the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince to Santiago, in the northern Dominican Republic.
"Apparently it was one of those helicopters involved in the rescue in Haiti," Mr Jimenez said, referring to the aftermath of last month's massive earthquake.
Mr Jimenez said the pilots did not inform air traffic controllers of any flight difficulties and authorities had launched an investigation.

while someone with good local knowledge is poking around trying to find a lead on their accident investigation site, can they try a check on the rumour that a 480B speared in over there a while back.
I looked but couldn't find anything.
thanks tet

I think there has only ever been one fatal accident involving an EN480 or 480B. This was in the Dominican Republic in May '09. A/c 'impacted the ground' and sole occupant died. No info on cause.

Haiti aid chopper crashes, two Americans killed
Two Americans were killed when their helicopter, which was participating in aid and recovery operations in earthquake-hit Haiti, crashed in the Dominican Republic, aviation authorities said on Friday. Skip related content
The U.S.-registered helicopter hit a mountain and burst into flames on Thursday evening at Restauracion, close to the Haitian border, some 175 miles (280 km) northwest of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's National Institute of Civil Aviation said in a statement.
The institute identified the dead Americans as James Jaloe and John Ward. But it gave no more details of their mission or cargo.
It said the helicopter was heading to Santo Domingo from the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and that it had been helping with aid operations for survivors of the quake.
The U.S. government and U.S. aid and charity groups have been spearheading a huge international relief operation to help hundreds of thousands of injured and homeless survivors of the Haitian quake that struck on January 12.
