Doesn't surprise me. A 212 pilot got 2 bullets into him about 6 or 7 years ago & still managed to take off & fly a good distance back to safety with his passengers who were all unhurt. Not a good place to be!

Yes, some basic info... the country is in the pooper, and you might get ruffled up a bit more.

That was "Picket", a name that he doesn't readily answer to nowadays, but i know the deep dark secret of its origin. One of the bullets lodged very close to his ticker I believe. Did an excellent job to get away with it I heard.

Ah yes, I remember D.G., and that very unfortunate incident about 8 years ago.

Kudos to Steve for never letting up and getting D.G. the hell out of Dodge when the air ambulance company tried to worm their way out of flying D.G. to proper care.

Lost contact when I left GHC, but would like to share a few beers with him again sometime.

Hmm... a couple of door gunners generally tend to discourage people in shooting at huey´s or 212´s.

Lucky Escape

Southern Sudan….Bell 212….seismic contract….bullets flying, sounds familiar.

I had a very lucky escape there in December 2001. I was shot three times by rebels who attacked us on the last sortie of the day. The 212 copped a few more rounds than that. I flew fifteen minutes (often expanded to 40 in the telling) to Tharjat One, an oil rig where there was a medic. Onboard were a kiwi ex-SAS loadmaster and four soldiers (two with gunshot wounds). Very lucky to have Mitch in the cabin. After being shot things were happening in slow motion. Mitch prompted me to do something by suggesting that we 'get out of here'.

Due to the efforts of too many people to list and a lot of good fortune, I made a complete recovery after eventually being flown to Milpark Hospital, a world class trauma facility in Johannseburg.

If you can't heed the wise word of Silsoe Sid, and must go, then make sure there is a plan to get you out if it all goes wrong.

Longdog, you are right, Steve did a great job. Lots of people pulled together to get me to Karthoum but then SOS, the contracted and supposed medical evacuation specialists, dropped the ball. They were rubbish. They said things like 'He'll be fine in Karthoum General, they see gunshot wounds all the time' ....meanwhile the Indian surgeon who had just removed fragments from my liver was telling me to get out ASAP before I died of infecton. Steve gave up on SOS and organized a citation out of Nairobi.

Topend, no deep, dark secret. When I was a slave at VRD, I had an altercation with a Bell 47 rotor blade with star picket in hand, while attempting to close a gate. Sin binned for a month to the turko-tub in the engine shop. The nickname didn't travel when I went to PNG.

Banger, Longdog and Topend, I am working for Bristow Australia, flying 76's and touring out of Karratha. Very nice and civilized. If you are heading up to Byron Bay, lets arrange a few beers.

Bryon Bay, huh; I'll do that if I get a chance, not too close to them hairy armpit jobs I hope?
Turko tub, right next to the sand blaster cabinet. "They" must have been displeased, a whole month?
No doubt you'd have noticed the CP strutting by occasionally whilst packing his pipe, and then regaling all with his philosophical witticisms, which stemmed from obs of the pions on the sand machine and turko tub??????

Karratha? that must be a hotbed of evil war stories given the endless stream of HUPL and now Heli-Muster dudes that have frequented the area over the years. A real worry.

Good to hear that you're still alive and close by Picket, I will look forward to catching up one day.
cheers tet.

Talking God

Picket, How the hell are you. Its been years. I'll catch up soon.
I did hear about the Sudan gig but thought you would be to slim to be hit by 3 bullets.
I bet you got some stories for me. Hey you still owe me a cartoon of cold beer from VRD.
