Personal Equipment

Oo-Err

However, a serious topic. The nav/flight safety/personal safety equipment provided by my company is of a standard above the minimum required by the governing authority but below that which is available. With pocket money I can purchase better/different moving map equipment, binoculars, night vision binoculars, leatherman(for cutting straps/fixing stuff), torches, beacons, clothing etc

Now, without changing SOPs what can I legally carry without risking the wrath of the governing body? I have discussed with company management about taking certain personal kit and they have assured me that I would face discipline proceedings if discovered. What personal kit is allowed by the governing bodies and what isn't? I have carried a torch and leatherman for years with no problems. Have I just been getting away with it? What about nav computers and personal pens, should they be safety checked before use?

Your thoughts please.

Heli out to the rigs?

Are you operating from the RZ requiring security screning or from the hangar?

hangar - carry what you like, just don't show the wrong person.
RZ - tools of the trade are allowed. No points greater than 3cm. Leatherman - no chance. GPS is ok. Security may want to see it switched on.
I sometimes carry a radio in a plastic bag - just in case.
That must be some pocket money to get better NVG's.
If you want to cut straps, I wouldn't use a leatherman. You will never get the thing open in the cold and if you do you may stab yourself.
Get a special divers knife with a chisel end.

But what exactly would you carry as personal equipment on offshore flights?

Whatever flights

PAPI knows what I'm on about, no screening, by the way. I'm just thinking about personal kit that you might carry 'just in case' not provided as standard kit. Standby handheld radios and torches - are these allowed by the authority because they are electrickery. Could they interfere with systems? My question is - where is the line drawn for personal equipment with regards FAA/CAA/legal? Is a non approved or certified torch or handheld radio, for instance, illegal when included in a nav bag or flight suit? What about handheld(with batteries) binos? GPS like garmin 295 etc. Is there a list? What is the view taken by the authorities?

Immersion suit and your headsets, a torch in your pocket, pen or pens. Shades, woolly hat and your load sheets..............and maybe a bottle of water. Oh and a hanky incase you sneeze And the crossword.

Who uses a hanky any more? I packed mine away in the same box as the cummerbund and the cravat.

Thanks for your suggestions for my personal MEL, MyTarget, but what personal equipment is acceptable/allowable by the authorities? There are loads of threads about personal GPS equipment. Are these allowed on public transport flights if not used as primary navigation? Are they allowed to be carried but not used? There are no sections on additional personal equipment in any ops manuals I have seen.

I can't believe I am even replying to this

If there is no regulation that prohibits you carrying something on board AND your Ops Manual does not prohibit it then you can use it. Have a think about what you would be allowed to carry through normal security screening as a passenger and you won't be too far off the mark

You must work for one scary company if what you stated is true?

However there is a one common theme in your messages

So I wonder if this is your real reason for posting?

The answer to this one is quite simple as well. As long as it isn't forbidden in your Ops Manual AND as long as you do not plug said machine into the aircraft power supply then you can turn it on. How you use it after that is down to you, BUT if you use it for navigation and something goes wrong you had better get ready for the sky to come crashing down upon you

If I am wide of the mark with my GPS guess then let us know specifically what other piece of equipment you were thinking of using..

BTW, ditch the Leatherman, that might well get you into trouble with airport security!
