Safetyinformation for airport firecrew

Hi all,
beeing a helicopter pilot does not always mean, just fly to do the job.
Boss asked me to prepare some safetyinformations for the firecrew at our airport.
We can brief them on the types we use, but thinking about the topic, I came up with quite a lot of things to think about, if I want to give them a good idea about the problems they might have to deal with.
Going from piston to turbine helicopters, thinking about Avgas via JetFuel or helicoters with military fuel with lower flamepoints,
thinking about used materials (magnesium in gearboxes)
approaching a turning helicopter with injured pilot
or approaching a crashed helicopter, where there might be tension in the broken blades,
thinking about exits, extinguishing points, about dangers for the helping from flotation gear, pressures, cartridges for winch etc.

Anybody further ideas - and most requested - material, like photos, powerpoints and stuff like that?

Hi Flying Bull,

Are the firecrew that you mention already trained up to deal with aviation firefighting, but only used to dealing with fixed wing? Or are you going to have to start with the very basics?

The best approach for either situation would probably be to have some professional training conducted - better results and relieves you of any responsibility should anything going wrong .

Otherwise I would suggest just giving them a basic safety brief on each heli type, and encourage them to keep their knowledge up with some further occasional visits. If need be, take some photos of the aircraft and stick some arrows on to relevant areas.

Hi FFF,

the firefighters are trained for aircraft accidents.
They work together with other firefighters from other airports and share information.
For the helicopterside it seems, that there is only little information on civilian airports - and thats why they start asking the people, who operate them.
The problem about professional training for them is - where to get it?
On civilian airports there is a wide varity of helicopters coming in for refuelling.
Last couple of days/weeks I recall EC 120, EC 135, EC 145, EC155, Puma, Super Puma, Army Lynx, MD Explorer, A109, Bo 105, Bell 206, Bell 222, Bell 205, Bell 47, Robinsons.....

You could try any one of a number of Oil and Gas training providers as they deliver specific Helideck Fire and Rescue training to an international standard. Just google OPITO and work your way through the site.
