What Wazz That!
While taking a Root Beer and Sammy break on board Luna C today....a very loud "KaBoom!" was heard! It was loud enough to evoke a three dimension reaction as my startle reflex remains a bit over active. After discussion amongst the crew, suggestions that the MCAS Cherry Point EOD folks might be having a field day.....but doubted that was the cause due to the sheer magnitude of the noise....we returned to the day's work of converting my hard earned cash into boat parts.
As I departed for higher ground a half hour later.....I drove by a MCAS Cherry Point Security vehicle going the other way at a high rate of speed with all of his many blue lights flashing.
That was a bit unusual as the Marine Plod was off his reservation at the time.
About an hour later....over the radio was the announcement a USMC Harrier had experienced an engine failure and the pilot pointed it in a safe direction and stepped out quickly. He landed safe and sound but alas the USMC is short yet another Harrier.
It appears I live in a "safe" area this days!

What slightly amazes me is that the F-35 Lightning, designed to replace Harrier, still only has one engine. Never been sure that you can apply fixed wing logic to a machine with high wing loading and VTOL capability.
