How many licences are there in the UK?
Hi Chaps,
I'm sure I read somewhere that there are 2000 qualified helicopter pilots registered in the UK and 40,000 fixed wing pilots.
Does this sound about right and if so does anyone have the stats in black and white............or have I dreamt it?

You can compare with Canada at Transport Canada.
Active in Canada:
PPL(H) - 542 3 with IR, 74 over age 65
CPL(H) - 2990 140 with IR, 84 over age 65
ATP(H) - 919 613 with IR (yeah I know, looks odd to Europeans), 14 over age 65
Oh yes, and 2339 helicopters registered in Canada as of Jan 2008

Is there anyway of finding out the exact number of current valid PPL(H) licences for 2008 instead of the total number of issued PPL(H) licences?
The reason I ask is that the total number of licences issued must be much greater than the number of current valid licences due to people allowing their PPL(H) to lapse and are no longer flying!
And does anyone know the percentage of PPL(H) that actually lapse and are not renewed once issued?
