Claiming the Pilot FRE

I read with interest the thread on the BALPA negotiated National Flat Rate Expense (FRE). Whilst I have managed to get my tax code amended the 'technician' who dealt with my request for back dating the claim has asked for receipts. Bit of a problem as the availability of the FRE was only just brought to my attention a few months ago so I have never kept any receipts for anything connected with work. Has anyone else come up against this sort of request? I gave the details to a work colleague who has had his tax code amended and been given a back dated claim without any hassle (or receipts!). Is it just a case of submitting it again in the hope that I get someone in a better mood dealing with it? As one of their own documents says, if it's not been available until now don't expect receipts to be available.

hey,

In March 2006 I wrote to them asking for FREA at the rate of £950 for 2006/7 onwards and £570 for the years 2001/2 to 2005/6, and they sent a refund after some correspondence for the tax paid on the whole lot.

they did not ask for any reciepts or any paperwork, but my company does have an agreement with them for this, but my company never advised me that I was entitled to it, in fact I only found out by talking to one of the other pilots.

regards

CF

anonythemouse: receipts are not required since payment is not for actual expenditure. The payment is a Flat Rate Expense with entitlement base upon your employment and already negotiated rates. So long as you can show evidence [not hard] that you were entitled for the period you want to claim back, there should be no problem. It may be that the 'technician' you dealt with was not a 'technical' in the subject as required. If so I recommend that you go to the relevant section of the web site and research the procedure then phone the erk and educate him.

I wasn't asked for receipts either. All I had to do was request by letter stating who I worked for and for how long. They didn't send me a cheque(shame) but changed my tax code for this year by about £2000. That was in addition to the change for this year's rate.

A load of us fixed wing boys at our work did the same thing and it appears it depends on who gets hold of your application with regard to getting stuff back dated. All using the same letter with the personal details changed.

We have had.

code changed refund on headset and previous years refund including the travel 100quid.

code changed reciept required for headset previous years refund including travel

code changed no reciept for headset refund previous years and reciepts required for the 100 quid.

And a whole heap of variations on when it can actually start ie. After training finished, when started work as an instructor, when actually got a line job.

And this was out of the same tax office.

Mind you that office is well renowned for differences between case officers. People have managed to get tax back on training bonds others got laughed at.
