Rotorheads Around the World (incl 'Views from the Cockpit')
vaqueroaero:
My logbook has Death Valley (Furnace Creek) in it - a few hundred miles or so north.
From memory it's 218' BMSL. Sorry.
(And what's spookier is the refueller knew Pewsey - he'd been stationed at Fairford, 20 miles away, during his time in the USAF).

Here it is .......... January 2004 Calendar
January 2004
To download the calendar (Windows users)
Right Click on the picture
Select 'Set as Wallpaper / Background'
Many thanks to all of you who submitted photographs. The quality was superb and deciding which one to use for the January calendar was a difficult decision.
One of the factors was whether the resolution was good enough to allow enlarging to full screen size and, unfortunately, some smaller pics didn't make it on to the shortlist for that reason only.
BlenderPilot has kindly agreed to host the unused pics on his website. We'll let you have the URL. Please post them in the 'Rotorheads Around the World' collection, with a description of the type, location, pilot, photographer etc.
Many thanks to BlenderPilot for creating the calendar, and to both BlenderPilot and John Eacott for all their help throughout the year hosting photographs for the collection.

Those photos were take in the Tararua mountains, only 10mins away from Heliflight (NZ) Masterton base.
They are quite cool, just wish I spent more time in them than I did.
Living in a part of NZ where there isn't much snow, then moving there and waking each morning with snow on the hills was quite breathtaking at times.

Glad you liked the shot!
If you downloaded the desktop before Jan/02/04, 02:00 GMT, please download it again since the current version has a much better resolution and looks nicer. Ned was kind enough to send a higher resloution shot and I just switched it, same shot, just better resolution.
Thanks to Ned for the picture! And also to all others who sent their pictures for, consideration, there were some other beautiful shots also.

Fantastic shot. On my one-and-only trip so far to NZ (20 years ago this month - sigh!) I stayed with an RAF Kiwi mate who was home on 5-yearly leave in Masterton. Enjoyed 3 days tramping around the Tararuas - equal to (or better than) any National Park in the UK, but "only" a Forestry Area in NZ. I remember the maps having the positions of crashed aircraft marked as landmarks...

A nice photo and a great idea.
What are the chances of having the current month in large print such as the January one, then having the rest of the year/six months along the bottom or elsewhere in smaller print?
That way it would be a useful planning calander as well as something nice to look at!!!
You could still change the photo monthly.

A few more from memory lane:
Flight deck of Eagle, with a recovering Sea King:
A fly past of the Sea King and the Phantom was for a Trafalgar Day event, but I'm not sure of the event, nor the location
Nothing new in flag flying: this was a fly past for the City of Leeds, in 1972:
An early PR photo of the dipping sonar from the Sea King, taken on the trials unit, 700S
A major offshore rescue (the MV Merc Enterprise) had a German Sea King force landed south of Culdrose. The German's brought a SkyCrane over to lift the aircraft out:
Dave Mallock was the Sea King pilot, and had severe salt build up on the IGV's of both engines after 6 hour's over water in 50-60 kt winds. One finally surged enough to put itself out, followed closely by the 2nd engine, fortunately just as they got back over the Lizard Peninsular. Dave did a night auto in driving rain into a ploughed paddock, and saw 30 degrees on the AH as he slid sideways through the mud, before the Sea King righted itself and came to a halt. 824NAS also had a Sea King with Lt Baker RAN driving, who had similar problems, but turned back when Dave gave his Mayday. After ensuring Dave ("Malarky Jim") was OK, the second Sea King made a command decision to land next to our local pub Well deserved pair of AFC's to the two of them.

How's this for some weird camera effect.
The photo was given to me by a friend (plank-winger) and I don't know where he got it. I'll acknowledge the photographer if I ever find out who took it.
I think its Rescue 510 (VH-ESD) that I used to fly on as a flight physician, based here in Cairns but it could be the machine from south east Queensland (VH-ESB I think)
