Type-rating revalidation
I have a UK JAA PPL(H) with Enstrom and 269C type-ratings which are coming up for renewal in September. I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone can help me with:
i) My type-ratings are valid for only one year, is that normal for helicopter type-ratings? I believe that fixed-wing are valid for two years, why the difference?
ii) Can I get them revalidated in any JAA state? I heard that there were some exceptions, for example Germany (which is naturally my first choice!), but that information is a couple of years old. Anything changed in the mean-time?
Thanks,
dp

Yes it is normal that helicopter type ratings are only valid one year even if it is only for PPL use.
Fixed wing guys have class ratings like SEP (Single engine piston) and for PPL the class rating is valid 2 years and they need to fly 12 hrs the last 12 months.
If I remember correctly you only need to renew you type rating on one piston helicopter and if you have flown the other type at least 2 hrs within the validation period then that renews your LPC on that to. You need to ask your examiner or licensing authority about that!

From LASORS (UK)
"Revalidation of a helicopter type rating requires a proficiency check in the relevant type of helicopter within the 3 months immediately preceeding the expiry date of the rating, and at least 2 hours (including the proficiency check) as pilot of the relevant helicopter within the validity period of the rating"
also;
For single-engine piston helicopters as listed below (Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 2.245(b)(3) refers), an applicant shall complete at least the proficiency check in accordance with JAR-FCL 2.245(b)(1) on one of the applicable types held provided that the applicant has fulfilled at least 2 hours pilot-in-command flight time on the other type(s) during the validity period which that revalidation proficiency check shall carry across. The type ratings for this purpose are:-
Bell 47, Brantley B2, Hughes 269, Enstrom ENF28 and Hiller UH12

Revalidation are normally not a problem to do in other JAA member states. But the UK-CAA seems to work in mysterious ways sometimes so you better check with them to be sure.
I am myself a IS/JAA-FE and routinely do LPC rides on other nationality´s and at least Scandinavian authorities as well as Irish CAA accept that.
If you want to get H-300 proficiency check in Iceland I´ll be happy to help out but it´s probably not going to be much cheaper than in UK.
The difference! My guess is because helicopters are more complex! I believe that F/W have to revaildate IR every year.
