Yeah, it got fragged recently by an RPG from a few careless school boys on their way to the local madrassa. In future those naughty boys should be more careful what they point their RPG's at. It's a sad day when an old 212 is turned into a bucket of molten metal, even a team of the best engineering talent couldn't resurrect this from the ashes.

p.s. anyone know if Mal S. had it insured? I bet he wishes he was over there a.t.m. with a mini-gun equipped 500 to seek retribution.

Edit: Remiss of me to jump to an obvious conclusion and blame this on a few of our Islamic friends. The other possibility is that some contract rascols hot-footed it all the way from the PNG southern highlands to earn a few Kina, as "payback" for Mal upsetting the taro cart and speaking out against official corruption and misappropriation of public money in PNG.

What's with the snow shoes and the 2nd (fwd) HF antenna? In those colours I didn't recognize it as a Pacific machine.

Where are they at now with this contract? it's the 2nd 212 they've had shot-up over there.

Previous posts report the aircraft was parked over night with a technical problem when it was used as target practice, and the crews had returned to base by other means.

PAV and PNG

Now look what you've done, you mention Poroma and Mel in the same breath and the dreams are back.
That smile, trust me, those lovely bunk beds in the Chevron camp, Naylors Lake, that aroma, ahh. Oh must not forget the Bar and Grill, and helicopter vodka, seeing so many succumb to the white lightning and taking a nap under bridges, in the fetal position, oh such wonderful days. Another era ends with PAV

Was it insured for war risk? Is Mal going to buy you another one?
Another Pacific machine unfortunately succumbed to fire, only the circumstances were somewhat different to the Puma's that got torched in the Goroka hangar.

Just a guess. Maybe the snowshoes and the HF antenna is from the period when the machine in the early eighties served (LN-OQS) as the governors helicopter on Spitsbergen/Svalbard in the north Atlantic (78 degrees North)? HF was used for communication, and loots of snow.

It has intact crashed before, on 23rd december 1982 it crashed on the sea ice doing a turn before landing. The main rotor hit the ice and it crashed. No serious injuries on those on board. It was during the annual pre-christmas helicopter trip when the governor and invited guests flew out to all the outposts with hunters on the island.

I am very interested in the april 2007 incident with the P2-PAV, as I am very interested in arctic aviation. I personally know the hunter who was to be visited when it crashed. He still have a part of the tail rotor mounted to has cabin wall.

Best regards,
Eirik Berger

Mark & Sue Burdoff transporting SC in the "Phoenix" (P2-PHX) at Vunepope

I wonder if it was insured?
Lol! Not unless 'Malapropism' was given a hint about the prospect of fire before it occurred!
