U.K. T.V. Prog: Seaside Rescue, Helo Question.

As a groungripping life-long aviation enthusiast, may I ask a question on this forum, please?
In the BBC Tv. Prog., Seaside Rescue, in several episodes, when the crewman is just starting to descend on the hook from the doorway of the helicopter, he appears to remove a pin or something from the hook/winch mechanism, and show it to the guy operating the winch.
Can anyone tell me what this is, and how/what it is used for , etc?
Thanks. N.Z.

Avid, maybe, but not posting 15 posts per hour, continuously!

Probably a safety pin for the winch wire cutter. We didn't have one in the RN in the old days but it seems logical.

El Viejo,

FYI, SiClick gave the answer in the other thread mentioned:

It stops the hook from opening (and the winchman falling off the hook) if the hook gets knocked as the winchman leaves the aircraft. He removes the pin once clear of the aircraft so he can quickly release himself from the hook when he lands on the boat.
Best wishes

You're right! Occasionally I have an hour off, then step it up to 30 posts for an hour!
Once again, thanks for the input, guys.

I think it is a system error. He has 500 posts and is age 13, but the file tab has gone.
