why is so painfully slow? does anyone else have this problem. half the time i have to give up on it when i need the TAFs

I suspect it's because they've got slow servers but a lot of people trying to access the information.

If you are after TAF/METARs or 214/215, try www.avbrief.co.uk. (It requires a free registration). The information comes from the same source but the access is considerably quicker.
