Brazilian tourists die in Chilean copter crash

Anybody know what type, any other details?

Sat 25 Nov 2006

SANTIAGO, Chile
Five Brazilian tourists and their Chilean pilot died on Friday when the helicopter they were traveling in crashed in southern Chile, the Interior Ministry said.

The helicopter took off at 1.35 p.m. (1635 GMT/1135 EST) from an airbase near the city of Coyhaique, 1,170 miles (1,887 km) south of the Chilean capital Santiago. An hour later, it issued a distress call before disappearing.

Rescue teams found the wreckage and the six bodies just after 7.00 p.m. There were no survivors.

Southern Chile is an increasingly popular destination for tourists, drawn to its lakes, fjords, rivers, snow-capped mountains and glaciers. Many visitors hire light aircraft to get a bird's eye view of the scenery.

The airplane that crashed yesterday in southern Chile was a Beechcraft BE-55 Baron. Pilot and 5 passengers (brazilian tourists) died on impact. Weather was poor, with rain and fog all over the area. A civilian helicopter that was operating in the area spotted the crash site and reported no survivors. The same helicopter brought the first team of rescuers near the site.

Condolences to all victims' families.
