ZU-RAS is one of the former Rhodesian AB 205's, (Ex Israeli)known to the engineer as Zim 6. This was one of the better ex Rhodesian "shells" they bought in a batch of four.
Ah - I was at New Sarum, at the hangar that wasn't really there, when the 205's that didn't really exist arrived.

I still remember watching in awe as the crates were opened for the first time....

Methinks I must dig out some old photo's (that were not really taken) and the old books and see if some info exists.

Will let ya'all know.

Cheers

OK
If we cannot go by serial numbers then lets do it this way. UH-1 Tail Rotor on the left. B-205 Tail rotor on the right, tractor type (212 drive train). AB Europe manufacture or German tail rotor on the left.

Dean
Thats the same site I went to and went back to check. We agree, must have got mixed up in translation, either way they are usually always registered by serial number not c/n:

22405 (c/n 13729) to EAF775 (Ethiopian AF?). Stripped forward fuselage noted at Solitude, South Africa Feb 10, 2002 bearing registration ZU-DUP (believed false

For the little ones (preschool)

ZU-DUP was registered to a Rans S6 based at solitude which changed registration when sold. Someone thought it would be fun to stick the old one on the side of one of the huey shells in the shed.

End of story.

Sousa stop trying to find fault and go mind your own business!!!!
Why did you not check the numbers when you were at Helibase??

Again I will depart this forum to more mature company!

Dog Bone........Too much grain in the food bowl......If your not working there what makes you the authority.. I guess jobs are hard to find even for the unqualified.
Remember I mentioned long ago, you wanted to get in my face......Im here for the duration.

Someone thought it would be fun to stick the old one on the side of one of the huey shells in the shed.
Just take any one. lets see three letters multiplied the the exponent....means 3 to the 27th power.........Hey, there are plenty of combinations........Instead of DUP why didnt you use
D U H or D U M, that would be more consistent..
You will be back, you cant leave this alone.

As promised....

A brief background to the Rhodesian AB205A’s..

Israel received 25 Agusta-Bell 205A’s between December 1967 to November 1968.
In 1978 Israel disposed of 11 205’s to Rhodesia and 6 to the Brazil Air Force which were converted to UH1Hs. The rest were scrapped with a few examples left in the IDFAF museum at Hatzerim. The construction numbers correspond to similar numbers of those received by Israel. The 205’s arrived in Rhodesia in September 1978.

The 205’s received by Rhodesia were in shocking condition, some with desert sand inside the panels and some with camouflage paint and markings on the panels relating to the Vietnam war. This was possible as the AB205 is the civilian version of the UH1 (Huey) and certain parts are interchangeable and thought to have been obtained on the open market.

There were a number of tail rotor assembly failures – one being serial number 6805 (referred to as s/n 6085 in the accident report), involved in an emergency landing on 11/12/1979 which ended up on it’s side. The tail rotor blade separated due to bogus parts supplied. The complete tail rotor gear box assembly was found 1.5 km from the crash site. One blade had been repaired and re-sprayed to look like new and had been sold to the RhAF as a ‘new part’.

The serial number is comprised of the squadron number, in this case 8 used as a floating number.

The 205’s

Serial. Model. c/n
8600 205A-1 4035
6801 205A-1 4036
6082 205A-1 4037
6038 205A-1 4039
6084 205A-1 4040

6805 205A-1 4042
8606 205A-1 4047
6807 205A-1 4049
6088 205A-1 4050
6098 205A-1 4051
6180 205A-1 4052

Losses are recorded as: (R)6807 – Cat 5 10.02.79
6098 – Cat 5 03.09.79
6805 – Cat 4 11.12.79
6084 – Cat 4 17.01.80

5 are recorded as being offered for sale in 1994: c/n 4035, 4039, 4040, 4042 and 4052.

Cheers..

I think I will pass, in fact maybe wander down to the strip and see if I can find some South Africans dumping all those hard earned Rand.

The Huey in Capetown

Hey Rhodie,
Check this out. The Jakkals and the LSD went over to the good old US of A and talked South West Aviation into letting them have a "modified" Huey, which means more scrap parts in close formo,on a "payment when cleared by customs in the SA". So geuss what, yesterday big G went to the Supreme Court and got a clearance to get the Huey out of customs because the "papers got lost at sea" and "we are the agents". so now there is a blue and white UH-1H/A/Whatever being stripped of all its stuff so that the bits can go into one of the Rhodieis scrap frames and the SW Huey is being retrofitted by the lawnmower mechanic, alias Jakkals, before the cops arrive with the warrant resulting from the SW Aviation charge of theft lodged with the Sea Point cops. Now tell me, with the tourist season approaching and with big G losing his case against the Waterfront and the CAA and with him having to pay the 3 bar costs you gotta be sure that these boytjies are going to have to do some serious tap dancing in the next two weeks. I bet you that they will now try and "legalise" the operation and ues the new "legal" huey on some new legal AOC to get back into the Waterfront. The Law school drop out left CT with a wad of "fresh " papers today to replace those lost at sea and is going to register the new huey at the Kremlin in Midrand tomorrow. By sunday, you really gonna see some neat stuff flying out of Helibase. Just hope the paint is dry cause that really is what is holding the thing together.
Ag Rhodie I miss the pieman and his three wheel cart at tea time in the hangar at Sarum. Remember what Barrel asked the pieman.?
Cheers

Come on Bert,
I hear the US registratiom is N900 something and that it has not been deregitered in the US. Want to venture some options before Elvis posts the registration. Bet you LH is swinging the spanners at some serious pace to get the "paperwork right". Now you know why the Dogbone was doing the cheese smile thing, he is helping to get the "paperwork in place. Moon is high and the dogs are out.
Cheers

AND...why are we surprised. Im bettin the Boys at SWFA are not gonna be serious happy campers, if in fact they got out foxed...ha ha good term. BUT, if you cant play with the Big Dogs, stay on the porch.
In Answer to the question, maybe it is one of these. Im sure the truth was also "Lost at Sea" http://www.airport-data.com/manuf/So..._Aviation.html

If what Wyat writes is rumour! GOOD ONE

If however it is true then unfortunately this is just another nail in the coffin of SA Aviation boys.

YOU GUYZ ARE A JOKE!!! Sounds to me youre shooting in the dark with your bifocals on upside down! Seems as soon as someone with more real info (read FACTS) posts a reply you all rush to refute these facts. Whats with that, afraid youll have to eat your words? By the way, I believe there are two personalised reg. plates available... HUEY WP & VEETNAM WP! Going cheap @ $10 a pop. Praps the Louisianna Sheriffs Dept would be interested?

G'Day Cowboy Bert. Just popped online to say hello. The fish are biting again and im feeling a little left out.

"God, i love it when someone keeps this useless conversation going"

Never-the-less, useless it may be but at the end of the day all of the Huey "hate club" will dine on fish heads soaked in tassies whilst the fleet of Hueys grace the skies...not only in Cape Town.

We are now thinking of putting one in Vegas....a low level extreme flight down the strip should bring that place back to life....and just maybe we will allow you to do the flying.

Cheers B, time for a cold beer.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but that wont happen. We have Rules/Regulations etc that are enforced. Try to run an Operation in Vegas like that one and you will get some time in the Gray Bar Hotel..........

Best they grace the skies of the Cape.......
I agree time for a Beer and some good Mexican food. Dallas skies were busy today.......

G'Morning B.

Just thinking about what you said. "We have rules and regulations etc that are enforced"

"Try to run an operation like the one we have in Vegas and we will spend some time in the gray bar hotel"

Hell man, if you guys can build ****t on top of the Statasphere Tower which in my eyes is way worse than having a ride on a Huey.....

Anything can be achieved when one sets their mind to it. Im more than sure one could start a Huey operation in the states and make gooooooooog coin.

We might just give it a go and you may fly for us as long as you promise not to drop anything...

Cheers..have a good weekend.
