Mi-24 / Mi-26 and Mi-8
One of my personal "bests" .. just a shame I took this pic in 1999 on a low quallity setting on a 640 x 480 cam they do not even make these days. 
But here we go .. bit of history in Sierra Leone. As the war was coming to a close the UN came in .. so my ship, the Mi-26 and then a Mi-8 in a HIGH Hover ... I personally do not fly a high approach landing at all (SA Airforce doctrine) but it has saved my a55 on many occasions.
The UN these days do a much lower quicker approach and the Civillian Russians are using "our" technique.

UNITED NATIONS Mi-26 in Sierra Leone
A fantastic helicopter ... 20 tons or 100 fully kitted troops at 135 kts. That is the Mi-26. Inside it even has it's own crane !

Chinook, Rooivalk and Mi-8
Ok guys I know you guys are used to this beauty but I got a massive hard - on when I eventually heard and saw a Chinook. 10 Sept 2000 at Cockerill Military Base.
You might remember Ops Barras where rebels (West Side Boys) took 11 British (Irish) Soldiers captive when they went off the "normal route".
South Africa's pride ; The Rooivalk. Close sources told me if it was not for American pressure - the British would have taken the Rooivalk. This is from a Pilot's viewpoint .. and this is a rumour network
Bokkie is a very old Mi-8 that is argably THE helicopter that won the war against rebels in Sierra Leone. She was THE helicopter / Gunship / Transporter that did it all before the Mi-24's. The Name BOKKIE (antelope) was given to her by a very good friend Chris Louw who died of cancer a few years ago.
Even after 5 years in the African sun, stripped and faded - the red words still stands out - have a look when you visit Lungi International next time ... oh and a salute to her will be in order

Not recent, and I wasn't actually there working on Helicopters - I was trying to arrange a satellite launch that never happened. But, this was taken roundabout the end of the cold war somewhere rather East of Moscow.

MD902 Explorer has replaced the AS365 Dauphin at London Air Ambulance.
The Dauphin flew over 5,000 hours and some 37,500 take offs and landings. It will spend a sunny retirement in the Caribbean as VIP and tourist transport.
The £4.2 million twin engined Explorer will be based at The Royal London Hospital's rooftop helipad. Sponsored by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin HEMS will be used to transport and treat severely injured patients on around 1,000 missions a year.
