bell 206 down southend
Typical Press !!!! Look at the cockpit.....how is he likely to be hurt when it is completely in tact. What a load of B******S I would feel safer in an accident like that , than falling of my bike!! But of couse its a helicopter and so is terribly terribly dangerous..... I hope his instructor is happy and i bet he doesnt pay his own insurance premium

"The statement issued by the airport said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Branch had been notified but did not need to attend. "
When do they need to attend?
So, if the pilot had been wearing a helmet, he may have had no injuries at all...

I might be wrong but I think they need to attend if there's loss of life or the police have to be informed.

I have just been down to have a look and take some pictures (I will put them on web soon but want to allow the dust to settle as I have been in trouble before for publishing pictures without owners consent) of the crash. The helicopter is a complete write off and damage is extensive. The Rotor system and Gear box are laying 75 feet from the body and i am told that debris was as far as 200 feet away. The Pilot did suffer head injuries (A nice lump of skin and hair on the door ) and these injuries WOULD NOT have occured if he had been wearing a helmet. It would be interesting to know figures for helicopter pilot injuries to the head that would have been preventable by wearing a helmet. There was another crash in this area 2 years ago to a fixed wind pilot who WAS wearing a helmet and it had split from front to rear from the inpact with the panel. I spoke to one of the Paramedics afterwards and they were convinced he would have been fatal or Veg if he had not been wearing a helmet. I think I am going to bring mine out from the cupboard and start wearing from now on....R22/R44 and helmeted pilot could be worth a few laugh.....
Have heard that Pilot is Ok and out of Hospital!

The mandatory bit about accidents is when we must report them. The Regs don't say when the AAIB WILL/must investigate. However, it is pretty obvious that they will almost always invesigate with a fatal. For less serious accidents, they can do a remote investigation, following up on the reporter's evidence. It also seems to make a big difference whether the flight is private or public transport, in terms of their interest. In that respect, they follow the whole regulatory regime.
There is a pretty hefty extra premium for insurance for ab-initio training on a Jetbox. Perhaps this could be one of those accidents explaining why. (I am assuming that this was ab-initio - there is little point in sending a stude solo on a type rating conversion). I was reminded of a similar event recently which occurred maybe 10 years ago at Luton involving a B206. The results were sadly fatal. A MR blade entered the cabin, as I recall, during hover/take-off manoeuvres.

Think you might be being a little harsh on the press. As one who knows his way round a jet-box and has seen a few in bits - First thing i thought when i saw the damage was "he's luck to have got away with that".
Consider the fact that the transmission and blades have been ripped out - they have a tendancy to do nasty things to the cockpit on the way through. Also the skids being collapsed indicate a reasonable level of vertical impact (or lateral movement). All things considered i feel that this gentleman was lucky not to have been more seriously injured. Am a big supporter of helmets and this is another brick in the wall for that argument.
Am happy to slam the press when appropriate, but not this time methinks.

Why? I have been wearing one in my Enstrom for a while now. I dont think anyone has laughed (or they do it where I cant see).
Most people look at the aircraft and say 'Good idea'
The ground doesnt care what aircraft you hit it with.
