Job Opportunities

I have just been accepted into OAT for the intergrated helicopter course and have decided to go for an IR when I qualify hopefully with a company like Bristows. From experience or knowledge can anyone inform me on the current job opportunities currently avaliable, employment prospects and other helpful advice. From what I can find out, everyone says you need to get on the north sea to build up hours, how realistic is this? Cheers.

Try searching on here - there's a very useful Training FAQ thread that you'll want to dig up.

Put simply, the path you are choosing is very expensive and relatively risky but if it works, the rewards might be worth it.

OAT Integrated = £49k (unless they've put their prices up).
IR = £30k-ish
Total cost: £80k-ish
Chance of employment in 18 months time? Who knows...? Your guess is probably as good as anyone's. But I can tell you this: the North Sea employment market is cyclical and they are currently hiring. Make of this what you will.

Another (slightly lower risk option) would be to go PPL, CPL, hourbuild to 250hrs then FI(R).
Total cost (depending on where you train): £40-60k
Chance of employment in 18 months time? Much, much better (but probably at a lower rate of enumeration initially). With these costs of training, the demand for FI(H)s is bound to outstrip supply and this is reflected in current job ads.

Really? Who's everyone??? North Sea = 300 to 800hrs per year (judging by previous posts). Onshore training and charter = 400 to 700hrs per year (depending on a lot of variables, though).

HTH,

PS The training at Oxford is amongst the best civvie training you'll get in this country though. Best of luck with it all either way.

OAT for the intergrated helicopter course
Excellent training, but are you sure integrated is the route you want to go? I've not heard of preference being given to an integrated graduate over a modular graduate come job time, and on the modular route you can come out with more hours, some change in your pocket, a nice mix of experience and types, and not having put all your eggs in the proverbial basket. Do it full time and you will match an integrated course on time scales.

have decided to go for an IR when I qualify
An IR with 150'ish hours TT all on a 300 or R22 is going to be a handful, but achievable - good luck!

The North Sea isn't really considered an hour building exercise, in fact if thats the aim you are far better off doing the FI route Bravo73 outlines.

Good luck

Maybe more opportunities in more horrible places in the world (also inaccesable/ unsafe/ hot) rather than North Sea. Lot of ex-Mil pilots with a lot of hours in the market.

Only about 6 providers of the IR(H) in the UK and 'not cheap'.

I come from Enfield originally so we must have gone to the same school.
