The owner of a Lee's Summit helicopter sales company faces 15 counts in a grand jury indictment alleging fraud in the sale of aircraft improperly repaired after damage in accidents, U.S. Attorney Todd Graves said.
The indictment alleges that Robert Schlotzhauer and Falcon Helicopter Inc. of Lee's Summit had bought a totaled helicopter for $30,650 and sold it for $450,000, Graves said in a written statement Thursday.
The buyer, Rainbow Air Inc., used the repaired helicopter to transport tourists at Niagara Falls, N.Y., after Schlotzhauer allegedly minimized the extent of its previous damages, Graves said.
The helicopter had been retrieved from a Dartford, England, crash site, and Schlotzhauer allegedly repaired it with parts from another totaled helicopter that had spent several hours in saltwater in the Pacific Ocean, Graves said.
The Federal Aviation Administration began investigating Schlotzhauer after a prospective buyer became suspicious of another aircraft Schlotzhauer tried to sell for $650,000, Graves said.
Schlotzhauer allegedly bought it as salvage for $110,000 after the $1 million helicopter had crash-landed. Graves said Schlotzhauer contracted with unlicensed mechanics to repair it and violated FAA regulations by improperly supervising the work.
Schlotzhauer ultimately sold the helicopter for $325,000 with an experimental aircraft certificate from the FAA.
According to Graves, counts one and two allege that Schlotzhauer committed mail fraud and wire fraud in the sale of the helicopter to Rainbow Air; counts three through 11 allege that he made false statements about aircraft repairs to the FAA; and counts 12 and 13 allege that he committed fraud by using false records and documents about aircraft parts when seeking airworthiness certificates from the FAA.
The remaining counts seek forfeiture of income Schlotzhauer received from the sales of the two helicopters.
A woman who answered Schlotzhauer's listed telephone number Thursday night said he would have no comment on the

Thanks - this guy tucked me up with a swashplate support for my machine. Supplied it with what turns out to be an 'incomplete' release form.
Unfortunately, my maintenance company fitted it and I flew round for a year in ignorant bliss, until a paperwork check revealed the problem. Answer? New support (half paid by maintenance co as they shouldn't have accepted it in first place) and Mr Schlotzhauer deying any responsibility - and kept the money I'd paid him. I'm glad he's been caught.
www.barnstormers.com sometimes come up with good deals. Oh, and don't forget www.ebaymotors.com
