Canary Wharf - Helipads
I am involved in organising a wedding that is taking place in Canary Wharf. As a surprise the groom is looking to whisk his bride off to their hotel by helicopter. Are there any public/private helipads in the Canary Wharf area?

heli weddings
please, please do not go past go, helicopters and weddings have a much greater risk than helicopters and the one serviceable component of six letters that is gauranteed to destroy them "camera"
there was a terrible one in oz recently, wirestrike. try taking a few primed hand grenades in the wedding cake instead. it might be safer

Vanguard Wharf is the obvious one, but you'll need to spend some money on at least a twin and some fire services to get within AOC rules. Unless one of the guests has a heli and is looking for the perfect wedding present ...

It's not just the landing site but due to Canary Wharf (Isle of Dogs) being within a restricted area you may need to apply for an enhanced "whiskey" number from LTCC.
If it is just a one-off you may be able to get away without it but give them a call. Very helpful chaps.

Hello Wedding Planner,
The closest landing site to Canary Wharf is the Vanguard Site. It's on West Ferry Road, Isle of Dogs. Having said that, there are no facilities on site, ie: Passenger Lounge etc, it's just a disused warehouse with some enough land to accommodate helicopters.
You will need to use a twin engine helicopter. I suggest that you contact one of the London/M25 Based Helicopter Operators and they can provide you with a quote. They will also arrange any necassary permissions that you may require.
It would depend on how far away the hotel is from London, but I would estimate £1,500.00 + VAT
Helicopters & weddings are generally a bit of nightmare though.
Let me know if there is any more information that you need.

Be a bit careful with Vanguard. Unless it has changed it is a tight site. Many AOC operators won't use it for public transport. It does not fit most Cat A profiles.
This leaves you with the option of one of your wedding guests arranging a private flight with their own helicopter- assuming you have some wealthy guests.

A nice romantic ride to Battersea in a boat could take you a while...... and kindof loses the "effect" of leaving guests by helicopter!
However, it is the easiest option.

I might be wrong, but hasn't the ExCel Centre been used by heli's in the past?
ExCel on Google Earth - N51 30 27.64 E0 02 05.63
I would agree with previous comment that contacting an operator & let them worry about permissions etc... would be the quickest way of finding out if it is even possible.

I will check tomorrow, but I am 99% certain that you do not need an ENSF number for EGR159 (Canary Wharf) IF you are l;anding at the Vanguard and approach from the south and go no further north than the Vanguard site.
Not seen many heli's in and out of the Excel though. (What about a dash across the water to catch a heli from Greenwich Park?)

Be prepared to push the boat right out. Landed at Vanguard and Excel frequently. Neither are cheap and personally I wouldn't fancy either in a single. In fact I believe Excel is twin only and Vanguard can be an absolute b***er in the wrong wind. If someone offers you an R44 into either then question a) his sanity b) his legal right to fly you there.
Good Luck
