Flying Hours (Proximity Switch or Strain Gauge)

What is the best device to initiate a device to record airframe flying hours? Can the skids be utilised, or does the engines have to be used? Your advise would be uch appreciated.

From an aircraft technician in Suffolk.

Regards

Joshua

The ones that favour the engine(s) are useful, as in the 135, counting time from when you pull power to when the oil temp drops. It enables you to sit at ground idle without the clock running. But you need a "start" counter too, to keep the engine manufacturers happy.

We had a switch on collective activating a hobbs-meter on up-collective and another on MGB oilpressure.

Usually a Main Xsmn oil pressure switch is used to pick off a signal to show M/R is turning this is then "AND" gated through a switch on the collective lever to signal when the a/c is (supposed) to be off the ground (this collective switch could be substituted by an U/C squat switch or similar).

Some will say the collective Sw. will give false flight time indications if you spend a lot of time in "flat pitch autororation" flight .... but you will have to weigh that up against flat pitch ground idle time and make a maintenance/owners requirements decision about that ???

Cheers
