Thankfully everyone got out of this, but what wonderful supposition from witnesses - "something went wrong with the rotor and the engine stopped".

ITN News at 11 had a witness stating that having hovered for a while in the vicinity the helicopter started spinning and descended into a house. Incident happened about 15 mins after sunset.

Just caught the ITN news a few minutes ago which showed the wreckage still on the house roof. I could only see one tail rotor blade but there appeared to be no obvious damage to the blade due to rotational forces at the time of impact.

Always possible of course that the blade was under power but did not strike anything during the crash, but it would appear from the limited viewpoint available from the TV that the tail rotor may not have been rotating when the aircraft crashed.

If that is the case then the pilot did a pretty good job bearing in mind the low operating height necessary for him to do his task and that the incident time was only 15 minutes before full darkness.

I'm glad everyone was OK, but wasn't it just typical of the politicians (local MP) to try and make political capital out of it.

Although never having been involved in this particular field, I do respect the work of police helo pilots and the good job that they do.
