Question ATPL-H Conversions

Greetings from Canada...

I am a Canadian helo pilot with ATPL-H and instrument ratings. I was curious if anyone on the forum might be able to provide some insight on converting these. Do most countries require a complete written exam and flight test or will some take them at face value?

Retriever, most ICAO nations require some form of conversion for an ICAO licence issued elsewhere.

Precise terms vary from state to state with some requiring ground exams plus minimum flight experience (or additional training) whilst others (usually the less attractive 3rd world nations) may not.

In JAR terms the final definitions as to what constitutes conversion policy is yet to be defined and properly agreed by JAR's FCL committee let alone distributed as an effective rule we can all witness!

In short those seeking FAA, CASA, NZCAA, Transport Canada etc. qualifications (fixed or rotary) might whish to ponder this very point carefully before parting with all that hard earned cash on the smooth words of a salesman.

After all, we would not wish to see the goalposts moved AFTER we qualified would we?

As ever no subsitute for good advice!
