He wasn't a pilot himself, however:

"A heavy smoker, Mr Packer had suffered a series of health scares over recent years. He underwent a kidney transplant in November 2000, receiving an organ donated by his helicopter pilot and long-term friend Nicholas Ross. His other kidney was removed after it was found to be cancerous in 1986." www.guardian.co.uk

So some connection to the industry then...

He owned 3 helicopters - an S76B, a UH-1H and a Soloy B47. At one stage he had 3 x S76A.

For somebody who never had formal training, he was a pretty dab hand at poling them around under instructor supervision. He also flew ultralights and owned fixed-wing ranging from Gulfstream to Falcon to DC-8.

Sadly missed.
