Can somebody tell me what he did wrong...can't see it for the life of me?
Was it paperwork?
Permission?
Lack of a brief?
Poor communications with the hierarchy?

what?

It is quite common to carry civilians in military aircraft BUT it requires a specific authorisation (used to be called a "civauth"), normally from a specific office in HQ.

110% that DM knew he was doing wrong!

Reminds me of the kiwi C130, in the early 90s. The crew met a few lovely ladies in Ireland....and flew them, and their car, across to the UK for an airshow.
The MOD police were far from pleased that a few Irish and a car managed to get onto and RAF station through the back door (as it were!)

Crab,

"...shot ourselves in the foot by not managing the PR properly ..."

You light blue chaps just haven't sorted this PR and Military Ethos issue have you. Just as well he wasn't awarded the AFC for his Boscastle heroics. Was it really 50 people he winched up, or was that just what he signed off in the auth sheets.

TC,

"Can somebody tell me what he did wrong...can't see it for the life of me?"

You can't see it ? He lied in his authorisation sheets by stating that he conducted IF training when he didn't, and you can't see it.

Wasn't winching the nude girls off the sand dunes at Saunton authorised as "Situation Winching"?
