Question Emergency Flares

G'day people,

Just had my first experience of firing flares during night autos (to illuminate your intended landing area). Has anyone else had experience of these devices and what do you think of their usefulness if it all goes quiet in the dark.

I had to use them for real once - make sure you don't let them off too high, otherwise the light won't reach the ground, and allow a fair bit of time between them, if possible. Otherwise I thought they worked quite well. I believe there is a 2-year sell-by date - observe it!

Ensure you carry a shovel and Pulaski along with you when you fly over dry brushy ground. You might survive the EOL to find yourself fighting a brush fire afterwards.

Get someone from old time Bristow days to tell you the story of a well known TC who in checking boxes mindset.....almost burnt down Ghalimorgie Airfield outside Tehran.

....And do not mash the wrong Tit while on the ground or hovering.....it can be an "enlightening" experience!

So what would be the optimum height agl to launch them, and how long do the last on average ? What kind of illumination and intensity do they give ?

From memory, about 1200-1500 feet was the optimum height, and they lasted for however long it took to descend through 1000 feet.

If you drop one, you will have to pick up a million candles all by yourself
