Spent Kerosene

So many pilots, including myslef, find the aroma of spent Kerosene, especially that from a Allison250 highly appealing in the morning. What is the ingredient which makes this smell so attractive to inhale? Anyone ?

Does your fuel contain a Fuel System Icing Inhibitor (FSII) such as Prist??

If so, then the odour you are probably refering to is that of the diethyleneglycol monomethyl ether CH3O(CH2)O(CH2)2OH, a low concentration (0.15%) substance which prevents condenstion icing in the fuel.

I haven't noticed it myself, but I guess it would smell slightly sweet due to the 'ether'.

For more information on this substance click here:

Hope this helps!

Rather partial to the smell of gearbox/transmission oil meself! Usually have a quick sniff of the dipstick when checking the aircraft over and usually end up with it on my face!

Cheers

This whole Whirls/SAS thing is getting a bit raunchy, I'd hate to think of that nice new Huey getting all steamed up.

But I did hear that they couldn't shut the door afterwards!

I`ve got an old` Matchbox` that I use Castrol`R` in, and the rest of the can gets put into the lawnmower,as it gets used more frequently; fill the sump and a squirt or two in the petrol, and there`s a blue haze everywhere....even if there`s snow on the ground !!.

You've obviously never sat rotors running in a 61 with the front cargo door open!
