Footage of Russian heli crash at airshow ?
Hello all,
I recently saw a brief clip of a Russian helicopter crash at an airshow ( possibly in Europe ). The pilot was doing some
"creative" maneuvering and eventually the rate of descent went way up, he seemed to touch down "briskly", the rotor disk flexed down and hit the ground, after which the machine rolled over.
Has anyone else seen this clip ?
I'm curious ( as a low-time heli student ): was this a case of his encountering vortex ring state ?
Anyone know if this can be found on the web somewhere ?

Hi Shall 555,
Haven't seen the clip, but having worked with Russians in Papua New Guinea, I know they haven't been taught about vortex ring state. As a rule their machines are very over powered, and after they crashed one in PNG in 1996, the truth came out about thier lack of training in a very unforgiving rule of physics.
Keep the fan on top!

Interesting topic, I had just recently meet a Russian pilot who was in Aust doing a conversion exam, and he told me that a lot of their emergency procedures are executed by jumping out of their choppers! (Using a shute of course) He had never heard of a tail rotor failure, or any other jammed control and emergency procedures, and was quite amused that we attempt to land a defective chopper instead of bailing out. He was a great bloke and I hope I meet with him again one day.

I wonder who are these Russian guys who stated they weren't trained in autorotations or lost TR control. All these words seem to be said by people who never acted as PIC but as co-pilot only. For example, our airclub CFI makes them almost every day - including autos from 50 meters with engine shutdown (crafts are Rotorway Exec - though I don't like them). A propos, US CFIs from Rotorway and Safari refused to do the same thing - they told "it's too dangerous"
Well, I'm not professional myself so I'll invite my fellow CFI to tell more from profi - he spent 6+ thousands hour in Kamov Ka-26 (never had a chance to lose TR control though )
Cheers,
GB

Come on guys! You forget that Russians every day play balalayka, drink vodka and fight with snowbears on the streets of their cities! What else..? BTW, about leaving helicopters in case of emergency in Russia, you body need to purchase a bit more sence of humor, at least couple pounds...
I was trained in Russia and logged few thousands hours there in fixed wing and helicopters. We had full training in all areas of emergencies during primary course as well as few times a year while mandatory refreshings. Come train in Russia and U will fly safe the rest of your life.
Good luck
