Post Fatal R22 Crash (NZ)

Helicopter pilot and a hunter die in a helicopter crash south of Fox Glacier - investigation will determine cause of crash

14 January 2002

Police say both occupants of a helicopter are dead, after the aircraft plunged into a valley on the South Island's West Coast this afternoon.

An emergency locator beacon alerted police to the crash, and the wreckage was found at an altitude of about 1,500 metres near the Cook River just south of Fox Glacier.

The Robinson 22 helicopter was carrying a pilot and a hunter, who were overdue from a game recovery operation in the area.

The helicopter's ground crew also alerted police, at about the same time that the emergency locator beacon was activated.

It is not yet known what caused the helicopter to crash.
