Garda Helicopter Operation
THE Irish Cabinet has sanctioned the purchase and equipping of a new Garda helicopter at a capital cost of £4.3m.
And it has approved a proposal by Justice Minister John O'Donoghue for the contracting out on a civilian commercial basis of the piloting and maintenance of the new EC135 aircraft.
This will be the first time civilians have occupied this role and the arrangement will operate for a trial period of at least 12 months.
The new helicopter will go into service next year along with the two Garda helicopters currently used for policing missions, with the total capital cost of the three and their equipment being around £10m.
An inter-departmental committee chaired by Justice will also include representatives of the Departments of Finance, Defence, Marine and Public Enterprise to assess the arrangement.
It is expected the Government will then decide on future arrangements for all three Garda helicopters.
Similar arrangements operate for UK police helicopters and have worked successfully there.
An initial assessment by Mr O'Donoghue indicates that the introduction of this regime here would help provide an improved service and would be cost-effective.
For the present, the current arrangements for the two Garda helicopters will remain and the Air Corps will continue to be responsible for their piloting and maintenance.
Over 720 arrests this year and the location of 20 missing persons have been directly attributable to the operations of the Garda helicopter unit.
They have also been instrumental in the recovery of £18m of property.
The two helicopters currently in service are a fixed-wing Defender and a Squirrel, both of which are specially-equipped for police missions.
They are considered to have been especially successful in major operations against dissident republican groups.
At present, the aircraft are piloted by Air Corps personnel who are also responsible for their maintenance.
Any word on the candidates for supplying the pilots and maintainence?

I believe the article is from the Irish Indo only they could make a gaff like a fixed wing helicopter.
Maybe its time for Lu and Nick to have another Barney over aerodynamics but I do believe that even in the land of the mythical little people bumble bees and four legged trotter users have very bad flight characteristics.

why has my posting disapeared has it been edited ?? who by?? why?? is it because of a reference to a buisness offering free news to heli people . heliport has mentioned northern echo in a post [yorks air ambulance] will he edit and delete his own post ??

Prune Admin apply very strict rules preventing advertising.
I take the view that somebody posting a news item saying "from the Tadcaster Chronicle" or wherever as a 'credit' to the original source, falls outside the rule. (Borderline, but Admin haven't told me my interpretation is wrong.... yet!)
Your deleted post wasn't a news item and didn't fall within the exception. You assumed Goldenhawk got his story from a particular source and added a credit - which may/may not have been accurate. If somebody chooses not to give a credit, it's up to them.
If you post a news item with a credit, there's no problem as far as I'm concerned provided the credit is given to the original source.
It's not my site. I don't make the rules. I just apply them.
