Boeing sets up organization for unmanned systems

ST. LOUIS, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Boeing Co., the second largest U.S. defense contractor, said on Wednesday it established a new organization to help expansion into the market for unmanned systems like the Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV).

Mike Heinz was named vice president and general manager of the organization. He will report to Jerry Daniels, president and chief executive officer of Boeing's Military Aircraft and Missile Systems, and to George Muellner, president of Boeing Phantom Works, the company's research and development arm.

Boeing said in addition to the two UCAV programs underway, one for the Air Force and one for the Navy, it is pursuing an unmanned concept based on canard rotor wing technology. That involves a helicopter which can convert into a fixed wing aircraft.

Heinz was most recently vice president and deputy program manager of the Joint Strike Fighter program. Boeing recently lost that $200 billion plus contract to rival Lockheed Martin Corp.

Cyclic Hotline; thanks for the interesting posting.

I looked up more on the Canard Rotor-Wing (CRW) and the following two sites may be of interest to others.

A light overview and sketch of the CRW: http://www.fas.org/irp/program/collect/crw.htm

A semi-technical page on the CRW: http://www.nas.nasa.gov/~aftosmis/pu...a2001-0997.pdf
