New Zealander John Reid has been honoured by Britain's Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators for his "skill, vision, leadership, and commitment" to helicopter flight operations in his homeland.
Mr Reid, MBE, was awarded the Jean Batten Memorial Award for his services to the industry, the guild announced in London. The awards were presented on Thursday in London, by Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Squire, chief of British air staff. Mr Reid retired in 1984, after flying experience on more than 90 types of aircraft put 16,000 hours in his logbook.
His legacy to helicopter development and commercial application was "of landmark proportions", his citation read. Mr Reid pioneered helicopter work in New Zealand in areas such as agricultural spraying, rescue techniques, firefighting, heavy-lift applications, and pilot transfers to shipping.
