Post IFR FAR ?

rotorque reminded me of a few questions I had about an instrument reg (apologies for not being UK related...or maybe it is)

regarding two way radio failure under IFR,
FAR part 91 states, with respect to altitude, maintain the highest of the following altitudes for the route segment being flown: 1)last assigned altitude 2)altitude advised to expect in a further clearance 3)minimum altitude

my questions are: how do you define "route segment" with respect to this reg, and, when would it be appropriate to decend to the minimum feeder route altitude (and would the situation change if the feeder route coincides with the airway or course being flown)?
