Flying Scenes From The Movies
Capricorn One.
Capricorn One wasn't too bad. It has a good cast, a pretty reasonable story line and gave all the conspiracy theory types their first taste of "Black Helicopters".
Telly Savalas steals the show though with his portrayal of a slightly angry crop duster pilot. His initial encounter with Elliot Gould's character is one of the highlights of the film and is brilliantly funny. Perverts!

"Shaker Run", anyone?
Basically a car chase around New Zealand with a Pink Firebird (I think). Has a few good helicopter clips in it. Its from about mid 80's, there was a bit where a whole lot of police/bad guys? cant remember, disembarke AS350s in the hover at the top of the Queenstown Gondola, and then the end of the movie they hook it onto a 214 and fly the car, driver and pax off a cliff in Wellington.
The original plot just had the helicopter appear with a line, hook on and go, but once the producer heard a 214 coming from 20 miles away and then do a standard Ag turn, he decided to add that into the movie.
From memory most of the helicopter flying in it was live, and quite realistic, quite a change from most movies...

The Gauntlet
I watched The Gauntlet on the weekend, great classic film with Clint Eastwood as a good cop trying to survive being taken out by other corrupt cops.
There's a Gazelle flown by the same guys from Blue Thunder which comes along and pursues him and his protected witness on a bike through canyons until they come to grief in a most dramatic ending.
Looks like they used an old Gazelle airframe or built an entire mockup to do the crash. They got the sound right, too!
