Thumbs up AH1Z/UH-1Y Photo Shoot

Thought it would be easier to answer the emails and PMs I got asking what I was doing around DC.

Well about one hour ago we landed after a totally amazing photo shoot here at NAS Patuxent River. We were up for nearly two and a half hours shooting on a day that had no clouds and we started shooting at 2pm so the sun was perfect. This will blow you away, my camera ship was the CH-53E, Super Stallion, the largest helo the US Navy has. The subjects were the brand new AH-1Z Super Cobra and the new UH-1Y. Both aircraft are still in their development phases here at Pax.

The OTT, PMA and CHINFO all approved me shooting them for the cover of my military magazine, Check Six. We shot the Z by itself, the Y by itself and then heaps of different formation shots with each one leading.

To wet your appetite even more the Z and Y also had full weapons loads on them. The Z had Aim-9Ls on each wingtip, rockets, and hellfires. The Y had a minigun on one side as well as rockets and the other had a 50 cal machine gun as well as rockets.

The 53 was great to shoot from, sitting on the back of the ramp with the Z right under neath us and we were looking straight down on him planform.

Overall the day was awesome and one of the best shoots I have done. Actually it was also the first time ever that the Z and Y have been shot in formation and in case you are wondering, Yes I will post some images here when I get them developed.

Case in point re: Autorotate's photographic skills.

Awesome work, always a pleasure to see your pics!

By the way, isn't it Nev, not Ned as everyone's been saying? Or is Ned a nickname?

Cheers,

SLC.

photographic skills

Hey Auto...one again great images. Which leads me to ask what is the history of your photographic skills.

Would you describe yourself as a pro photographer with a passion for fling-wing aviation or is it the other way around ie - an aviator who knows his shutter speeds and f-stops.

As is often the case with `action` style photography the shooters position to the subject it a big part of the battle.......seems like you have that part all sorted out!!!!

Keep those pics coming

SLC - Nev or Ned, whichever one you feel like calling me. Neville is proper name but nickname has always been Ned so take your pick.

Ground Effect - Actually started off as a skid biter when I was about 14 years old. My first ever ride was in a Sioux with the NZ Army, actually by the current Chief of the Air Staff when he was flying them, AVM John Hamilton at a place called Waiouru. Its a hell hole in the middle of nowhere in the central north island and since it was an Army facility and I was an Army brat, it was a natural place to live. From that day forth I was hooked and have been associoated with helos since that day, some 23 years ago.

About 1989 Ross Macpherson, now deceased published my first ever story and photos in NZ Wings magazine when I went flying with the US Custom base in Puerto Rico. I got such a buzz out of it decided to make that my career.

Having been a part of the industry for so long, and also learning to fly, gave me a good understanding of how to capture dynamic images of helicopters, including all that F stop crap.

Whenever I go on a photo shoot I always make a point of trying to one up myself from the previous shoot. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. These images on this thread were fun because everything I put down on paper I wanted to get, Hoss and the guys obliged and we just added it to the brief.

The only types of aviation I shoot are helicopters and military aircraft, except ag aircraft as they are always fun to work with. I hate civil plank wings and only shoot them when its a matter of life or death (translated when I get paid heaps of money).

Anyway hope that answers your question and yes its still a passion for me. I am always aiming for that one in a million shot, but even though I cant describe what it is, I will know when I get it.

Question photos and stuff

Groovy. What type of gear ore you shooting with at the moment....I am guessing digital SLR ....do you sit on the Cannon or Nikon side of the fence....have you got any cool 20mm (or shorter ) shots of close up action at the controls or from the ground outside just as the skids break free??????? If so would love to see them.
Thanks

Actually I dont touch digital at all as I sell a lot of images to the manufacturers and for them to do what they need to I send them an original 35mm slide.

Cameras of choice are Canon EOS1V x 2, 35-350 lens, 28-70 2.8L lens, 70-200 2.8L lens, couple of wide angles and just got a 100-400 stabilised lens to see how it goes. ONLY film I use is Fuji Velvia or Velvia 100. If its a ****ty day then I might use Provia 100. The colours are awesome and contrasts best of any of them and its a stable film so you dont get a lot of colour shift between rolls of the same film.

Will go through my files and see what sort of close ups I have and scan a few in.

Havent really shot many real close ups of helicopters, seems like the blades usually get in the way. However I have some great shots of Air Tractor 802s in the OZ outback spraying cotton and some of them were low enough I can still feel the wheels sailing over my head. As soon as I can get them hosted I will post them here. Keep an eye out for them.

Great shots , The Huey will live forever!!
The ZULU Cobra is what the Australian army should have got not underpowered Tigers! at least the Spanish bought them with bigger engines. The Aussie Tiger i've been told will not hover with full fuel and a full weapons load over 35 oC ,so were do the Army put them..... Darwin were it is over 30oC all year round ! and the new partical seperators will take 10-15 % off the engine power as well, good choice of Helo boys!!!
