Moving Maps?

moving map displays , as far as I am concerned , are the BEST aid to SITUATIONAL AWARENESS in IMC that I have ever come across.
If you are in the soup and the world is going crazy and you get confused.....switch your GPS to moving map display and ..hey presto.....not only do you know where you are but where you are pointing...of course it all depends on your GPS. Don't get the idea that I am trying to advertise Garmin but that is the box I have used most with a moving map display, specifically the 400 series. Not only that but they give you a free simulator to get up to speed on...unlike other manufacturers.
Bleeding wonderful....shud be mandatory for IMC flight

Some of the other GPS boxed DO have a demo mode - only problem is that it's not, like the Garmins, a piece of standalone software, more a mode on the box itself.
While you CAN remove the kit from the aircraft to have a play (with a suitable mains converter) I think it's a bit too much trouble !

My moving map was an absolute pain in the arse.
I ended up putting the door on to stop it moving and blowing around.
my advise, use a GPS........... much heavier and you can leave the door off on those hot days.

Well, since we are talking about moving maps...
We deployed a Huey to Central Australia in the late 70s to support some Army reservists on an exercise. Towards end of financial year, cutbacks, only one set of maps was taken.
You can guess the rest.
For those too lazy to guess, they had the back doors open (40 deg plus) and the cojo was navigating (no navaids other than an ADF) and the Major in the jump seat says "Hand me the map!"
He tries to re-fold it and phhhhttttt out the door from 2000'.
Spent the rest of the exercise using a Caltex road map stolen from a service station.
