Firestar Responding To Overturned Propane Tanker

POSTED: 2:18 pm EST March 1, 2004
UPDATED: 3:11 pm EST March 1, 2004

A rescue helicopter became stranded on a busy Orange County, Fla., road Monday after it experienced mechanical problems while trying to transport an injured man involved in a propane tanker crash, according to Local 6 News.

From: http://www.local6.com/news/2886469/detail.html

Authorities said a propane truck overturned Monday afternoon at Taft Vineland and Orange Blossom Trail near Orlando. The driver was the only person injured in the wreck.

When Orange County's Firestar helicopter landed on Orange Blossom Trail to transport the patient, the pilot noticed a mechanical problem and could not take off again.

The helicopter remained stuck in the southbound lanes at 2:30 p.m. forcing authorities to close the road, according to Local 6 News. The helicopter was put on wheels and moved to a nearby parking lot at about 3 p.m.

Traffic is expected to remain slow in the area Monday afternoon.

Anyone know more? I'm curious to know.

Excerpt from WFTV report
Medical Helicopter Breaks Down On Busy Orange County Street
4:25 PM EST March 1, 2004

Orange County's 'Firestar' medical chopper landed to take an injured person from a car accident to the hospital. But then, the helicopter couldn't get off the ground.

The Firestar helicopter landed and loaded an injured man.
"When they were getting ready to full throttle the helicopter to lift off and transport the patient, that's when they heard something funny coming from the engine compartment," explains Ric Rivera, Orange County Fire Rescue.

They decided to abort the take off and take the patient to the hospital by ambulance.
"I was told by the flight team, there was only a four-minute delay from the time unloading from helicopter to load on ambulance and get rolling to hospital," says Rivera.

It took the traffic even longer to get rolling, about an hour before 15 deputies, troopers and paramedics pushed the 6,000-pound aircraft off the roadway.

The mechanic says, once he has the replacement part, he'll fix the chopper in the parking lot and then the pilot can take off.

Probably because BK117s are few and far between in the UK. You seem to like the nice new fancy toys up there

Down this end of the world we have them everywhere, sort of like Toyotas.
