Black Hawk crash Queensland

Eight survive Army chopper crash

Emergency crews are now in the process of taking eight Defence Force personnel to hospital after a Black Hawk helicopter crashed in South-East Queensland.

The Oakey-based Army helicopter crashed near the Bremmer river at Mt Walker, 20 kilometres from the RAAF base at Amberley, south-west of Brisbane.

A Defence Force spokesman says it was on a routine training exercise at the time and there are no obvious signs of mechanical failure.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene to treat the eight people on board.

It is understood four are still able to walk.

One is being flown to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra hospital, which houses a specialist spinal unit.

Another is being flown to the Gold Coast hospital.

Two others are being flown to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with serious chest injuries.

Local farmer Norm Kerle says he san see the chopper from his house.

"I didn't take any notice because they've been flying very low, I'd say a few times during the morning - they would have only been 20 or 30 feet above the house here - they're actually quite annoying if you're trying to talk on the phone," he said.

"We didn't take any notice of it. There was obviously no great crash or anything. It was a kilometre away, so we didn't take any notice to it."

He says residents are being warned to stay away.

"Our fire brigade secretary was the one who rang and said that it had gone down and we've been directed not to go near it."

THREE soldiers with suspected spinal injuries have been airlifted from the site of a Black Hawk crash near Amberley, west of Brisbane.

Eight people are believed to have been on board the helicopter when it crashed in rough terrain near Mt Walker about 11am (AEST).

Rescue crews had to trek almost 1km through bush to get to the crash site.

Three helicopters, with intensive care paramedics on board, rushed to the scene.

Three of the injured, including the pilot, were airlifted to Brisbane hospitals while five were treated at the scene by defence personnel.

A defence force spokesman confirmed there had been no fatalities in the crash and said the victims' families were being notified.

A press conference would be held in Canberra shortly.

Just watched the report on the six oclock news. The machine was prety badly damaged.

The highlight of the report though was definately the highly informed commentary from some of the local farmers and housewives discussing things such as unusual approach angles and the terrible safety record of the Australian blackhawks ( 2 lost in training accidents 2 lost in a midair) such a dangerous aircraft it is a wonder anyone is game to fly in them.

I can't believe that stuff like that qualifies as journalism in this country.

Don't even get me started on chanel 10's hard hitting report on the R22 last night

Overpitched,

I too saw the 6 o'clock....yes badly damaged lucky no one fatally killed.

reports here say "the tail rotor struck a tree and a short time later spiralled out of controll!!" we i guess it would, they then proceded to report that the black haws have had a scarred history with 2 colliding on a night ex. this got up my back also and my girlfirend had to bear the brunt of my anger toward the media.

anyway the next story on was about a H300 in melbourne today on a training flight that had crashed due to a practice tail rotor failure in the hover. it was coincidental wasnt it to put the 2 together.

dont you love the media sometimes

ch9 had the interviews with the farmers/blackhawk experts but I'm pretty sure it was ch10 that had the story on the woes of the r22 the night before. It was a classic piece linking recent blade failures to Tuesdays training crash at Caloundra.
