Bristow Tiger fire, Scotland

Airport Alert after Fire on Helicopter

By Victoria Mitchell, Scottish Press Association

Disaster was narrowly avoided today after a fire on a helicopter carrying 20 workers off a North Sea oil platform.

A fire broke out in the cockpit of the Bristow’s Tiger helicopter which was heading to Shetland.

The crew managed to extinguish the fire and the helicopter landed safely at 4pm.

The incident happened minutes before the helicopter was due to land at Scatsta airport in Lerwick.

A full emergency was declared as a precaution, but services were ordered to stand down after the helicopter landed.

The helicopter is is one of five Bristows have based on the island.

Paul Kelly, watch officer at Shetland Coastguard, said: “We were alerted by the airport to the situation and sent our own helicopter, which was on exercise at the time, to the scene.

“We also launched our Lerwick rescue craft to the area but the fire was quickly extinguished and our services were not needed.”

It is understood the helicopter had taken off from a platform in the Ninian field.

Red face

Get the basics right first; LERWIK is the capital of the Shetland/Zetland Isles. SCATSTA is an airport on these islands supporting the offshore industry. SuperPuma/Tiger/AS332 take a max of 18 Pax.

Amazing that journos don't check their facts.
The one quoted is from the Scottish Press Association so it will have been syndicated widely.

Yesterday the BBC website showed a pic of a Twin Squirrel when an EC120 crashed at Swansea.

Up here in the frozen north any helicopter incident at Aberdeen is treated as a near crash by the local paper the P+J. The media never change - why let a few facts get in the way of a good story!!

We changed from the old Whirly 10 to the slightly newer Wessex 2 at Chivenor but the local TV always showed a picture of the Whirly. To help them get it right we sent various colour pics of the Wessex in action- it took 2 yrs for them to change from showing the Whirly to showing the Wessex!!

Up here the Seakings have never been based at RAF Kinloss but the local media often quote that "the Seaking from RAF Kinloss....." (from 2005? they will be based at Kinloss so I surpose they will then say ... from RAF Lossiemouth!!)

The one I like most, 'cos it annoys the fisheads, is the "Seaking from RAF Culdrose......"
