Thunderstorm Avoidence?

Hey guys?

Just a quick question, currently stuck in the bush and the boss is looking for a detailed answer on thunderstorm avoidence. I bellieve there is a formula, for CB height and distance to avoid? I know the basic guidlines, but am searching for a more detailed answer.

Thanks...

quick reply...

avoid by 10nm if top upto 10 000'
avoid by 15nm if top upto 20 000'
avoid by 20nm if top upto 30 000' and above

give or take depending on the size, stage of build up and always TRY to fly on the upwind side if possible.

if you fly above it, make sure you have at least 2000-3000' clearence but its not advisable :ok:

hope that helps.

My previous company used very similar figures, but even more careful: 10nm <FL100, 20nm <FL200, 30nm <FL300 and 5000' above if you really had to. Easy to remember too.

The "formula" we use from our FCOM (Airbus A320 series) is:-

height (ft) = distance (nm) * tilt (degrees) * 100

Where:-

height = vertical distance between the top of the cell and the aircraft flight level

distance = the range you have set on your ND

tilt = the tilt set per the wx radar
