Fingers cross it's not running a variation of Windows....

I must say it does look like M$ Windows, with the blue bar across the top of the screen...

Also the stand-by instruments look electronic...

So, actually how dangerous to flight safety is a tea/coffee spillage?

This thread talks about Domains and software firewalls, it sounds very Microsoft !! But then most iterations of Linux use the same terminology, so who knows, common sense would suggest it would be a hybrid OS written specifically for the job in hand

I'm sure MS would be shouting from the rooftops if they were supplying an operating system for the A380....

It is definately Airbus' Electronic Flight Bag. Approach Plates/Terminal Diagrams would be available here as well.

Not sure if it is Windows or maybe (hopefully) Linux based. I'll get back to you on that.

A friend suggests the PC's were the PMCs - passenger management computers :p

Most engineering applications are WinNT-based these days and so is the EFB in your 777.

Windows on the flightdeck makes me feel uneasy about automation! M$ can't even make XP run consistently!

Seriously though: these days most (if not all) problems associated with Windows not working for consumers are of the PEBKAC and to a lesser degree of the hardware/driver variety.

Windows XP and 2000 work perfectly well on this side of the fiber and have done so ever since I first installed them. A few hitches yes, but nothing that went catastrophically wrong and rendered the system unusable.

Rest assured, the version of the OS itself that is used as well as all the software that is used on it will have to be certified to use aboard passenger carrying aircraft. :suspect:

So, no blue screen or ctrl+alt+del a few seconds before touch down ?

Your faith in Windows is touching. But I'm not sure if a lot of people would share it. I sure hope it isn't running anything critical on the a/c, cos I think it's a bug-ridden, error prone piece of shi*te myself.. :uhoh:

I can't say I've ever designed an airliner but I sure as hell would not use windows if an O/S was needed. It may be used for filing approach plates etc, but as for "critical" stuff; i very much doubt it. I assume the chaps at Airbus know what their doing and would not stick windows in the A380 (very dark...). Afterall, its american...;)

Naaaaaah, that would be too obvious :p

Apparently my colleagues at LHR are laying on Wi-Fi at all the gates that the A380 will use. As the a/c comes within range, the Electronic Flight-Bag will update itself automatically and then the a/c will upload the latest changes in the entertainment system, new films etc.
