Question TCAS Questions

All I know about TCAS is that it provides TA and RA's when it detects a possible conlict. The RA will be calculated in conjunction with the other traffic's TCAS if they are both set to RA mode.

I'd like to know the following:

1. Who has TCAS fitted? Is it mainly European airlines, is it mainly transatlantic aircraft?

2. Is TCAS required to comply with RVSM rules, or is it just the certified alitmeter?

3. At what point is a TCAS switched on/off? Is it from airbourne to approach? Or is it switched to TA mode only for ground operations?

4. How does TCAS determine when to issue an TA or RA? Is it when traffic is within a certain distance and what kind of distance is this? Does it take account of aircraft speeds?

5. Is an TA always issued before a RA, or could you just get an RA?

6. Who often are TA/RA issued?

Thanks in advance for your help, and of course any further info will be much appreciated.

If you do a search of Tech Log and put "Capt Pit Bull" in the "search by username" box and "TCAS" in the "Search By Keyword" box, I'm sure you will find answers to all your questions.
