Oxygen masks and smoke

Listening to a podcast this morning, I heard something I wasn’t aware of.

In the event of smoke in the cabin, should oxygen masks be dropped and used? It sounded like masks are really use for decompression, to keep positive airflow until below x thousand feet.

I may have misunderstood- but what are the conditions for oxygen masks being dropped. Do they actually supply oxygen? Or just air? Maybe releasing oxygen on a suspected fire isn’t a fantastic idea.

Passenger oxygen masks are not smoke hoods. They mix O2 with ambient air and are of no use in smoke.
