Circular contrails

Hello
I have seen a question on another board from someone who said he saw what lookes like a 747 doing circles at high altitude around the Hull area leaving like a chian shaped contrail. I think this may have been an AWACS on a training exercise as I have seen a satellite photo of a similar contrail somewhere on the net, and it said it was an AWACS circling over the North Sea, but can any one correct me on this, and say exactly what it could have been as I do not think they would do this close to a major airway, but I have seen circular contrails over Liverpool (where I live) in the 80s-can anyone tell me what this could have been as it is a major airway where we are
