ATPL or CPL medical?

Hello guys,

New here, but I have been following you for a while by now. My name is Mathieu and I work for a private jets operator. At this regard, I have a question for which I have been unable to find an answer up until now.

Alright here it is: we have a pilot having a FAA ATPL but flying on a private jet. He's just turned 40 and should normally renew his medical class I every 6 months. But his operations do not require him to use his ATPL privileges, only CPL (private jet). So my question is: may he operate under his CPL license and then renew his medical class II once every year?

Thank you for your answers!

Yes. If he is only using his commercial privileges he only needs a second class medical every 12 months. See FAR 61.23 (d).

Thank you for the answer. But if one holds an ATPL, is his/her CPL still valid?

In Oz all licenses are revalidated when the highest, ATP, is renewed. In the case of a pilot requiring six monthly medicals, his/her ATP will "fall back" to CPL after the due date of the ATP six monthly. If all you need is CPL, that's fine and beaut. This applies to pilots over sixty as I recall it, until then twelve months is the time for ATP medicals.

Be aware that I know next to nothing about the FAA rules!

Thank you for the info. Does anyone know if it is also the case for FAA licenses?

Thank you for your time, guys!
