Gain adjustment
Hi..I am working on a Human Factors report on Air France Flight 447 accident and have some doubts regarding the cockpit.
What is gain adjustment on the weather radar and how does it help?
What is the calibrated mode and what are its disadvantages?
Kindly help me out please!

Receiver gain varies the amplification of return energy, therefore the display intensity/color.
CAL mode enables Turbulence mode. It is generally a very low gain, so will display much like minimum gain. It is the normal mode for us, so we use manual gain only when looking hard for breaks in the weather.

To expand on what intruder said, you might have a 3 color radar for precipitation:
Green: light
Yellow: moderate
Red: heavy
So if you had an area of moderate precipitation it might all paint yellow. As you reduce the gain the areas that are lighter precipitation within the yellow area turn green
Airbus has pdf of weather radar use, you can find it here:
http://www.airbus.com/fileadmin/medi...V_WX-SEQ07.pdf
It has a nice section on the use of gain, and also on tilt management. Tilt management is where most pilots get tripped up on radar operation.
