Can you go off airways for any substantial distances if when long range?
Is there a "free sky" rule which says you can but perhaps at a different (higher) level than most of the other traffic. Reason for asking? To take best advantage of Great Circle Track. Notwithstanding:- Direct To`s, a planned but temporary excursion, emergency exiting awys, and desc and approach. Remaining IFR. In other words, you Flight Plan, literally, your own route.

Also question and ansa - why route middle east / India and Thai as a certain UK major airline does to get to mid points in China when a nearer GCT would take you across Mongolia having routed central Siberia Ansa? Is it because there is more chance of a telephone if things get interesting (the more southern route) than there would be if you had to bang in, in the middle of Siberia and the nearest walk to Mcdonalds would be about 3,000 miles .. ?

So 2 Qs then:

1/. Can you fly off awys for the best part of a long route(apart from a DirectTo?)
2/. Why does a major go the longer way to get to . . Aussi say? From the UK/EU

Or, does no one know as it is unheard of and everyone stays on awys anyway?

In China you are really restricted to published airways..most of the countries airspace is under military control with very narrow corridors assigned for civil use...to get direct tracking/shortcuts just doesn't happen..
