Licence Currency

Hi there.
I am not 100% certain if I am posting in the correct forum, but here goes.
I am scheduled to start flight training on the 18th of February next year. But I have a burning desire to join the military, although it does not necessarily have to be next year. That is why I would like to know how long an ATPL licence is current for, would it still be valid after 5 years of no flying? as well as if it does not stay current, would I have to redo all my training, or is there some sort of check-ride I can do?
I know it may seem daft to do my flight training before enlisting, but there isn't much else I can do.
By the way, I am South African, and would be getting an South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Licence. If that changes anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
