Laid off from 1st November - Help

My employer has just advised myself and dozens of other 737 Captains that our services will not be required for this winter and we may apply at Christmas for our jobs again to commence 1/4/13.

I have a family and mortgage to pay and am interested in any advice suggestions as I am not aware of any flying opportunities for pilots on less than a six month contract.

Thanks in advance

Sunwing or Canjet in Canada for foreigners. But that is for the winter until spring.

Lots of options....if you have some cash get a sim instructor rating over the winter. Not only would it give you more work than you can shake a stick at when its quiet...but also if you lose your medical for most of the normal reasons you have something to fall back on. If no cash I've just started a courier business (and that is even more of a growth market). Sure many others will have some outside the box ideas.

Lay off

There appears to be a contradiction between being laid off (a temporary measure during which your contract of employment persists) and inviting you to reapply for your jobs.

Sound like you are entitled to a redundancy payment / damages for unfair dismissal.
